Background
Maitland de Falt is the eldest surviving son, of the youngest brother to Sir Rhun de Falt (Rhodri). Younger still than the bastard Cadogan, raised himself to either be a priest or a steward by his mother, Maitland did not expect to be thrust into knighthood, but he invariably was yanked from his priestly studies at age 14 and then forced to go through the whole training to be knight when his elder brother Malcolm died during a squire's tourney in Chesire (a sword to the head, hit just right.) Rhodri not to be without some martial son, picked his rather quiet and bookish Maitland and ripped quill from fingers and forced a sword to it, whislt paying a fee to the church for his grievance.
After being thoroughly whacked from every Chalke to Bodenham in the South, he was finally squired off officially with one of Oswallt's household crew. As such he saw action under the Bannert knight, and earned his spurs-which was enough for Rhodri, who promptly died the year later of a heart attack, whilst abed with the young man's mother.
Since such partings, Maitland has more or less moved into service under his cousin, Custennin. Acting in some times as chaplain, steward and household knight when times for iron and steel are called for. Though not horribly ugly, his smarts do make him a fine pawn to be used as the family sees fit.
