Born in 489 to Sir Gwydyn ap Iago and Lady Alaw of Newton, Gwion ap Gwydyn was the first of many children of this loving union. Their household persevered through war, betrayal, and intrigue, all the time staying close as a unit and united in their support for the Pendragon and their Earl. Sir Gwydyn, like his father Sir Iago was a benevolent manor lord, showing charity, prudence, and a just spirit that made those that worked on their land and lived in their village, take pride in the names that they served. In turn, the family made sure the town and farms were well protected, and that the people were fed and clothed, even when it hurt the coffers of the Knights to do so.

The village and surrounding area was a long-forgotten Roman settlement, and the people there had ideals and even hereditary features that made them seem slightly different than the rest of the Cymru and Britons of the county. These ideals and long-held beliefs can be seen in the family's coat of arms, their Roman Christianity, and their distrust of the pagans.

Gwion grew up hearing about the Saxon raid that destroyed Oxbow Hill, the original town that Newton was built. He heard how they killed his great grandparents and nearly slaughtered all of the townspeople as they besieged the manor hall. Through the heroics of his great uncle (whom Gwion was named after) the Saxons were beaten back and the captured women and boys were freed from the clutches of the Saxon enemy. Nearly twenty years later, Iago funded the final rebuilding of the village and established Newton as a place of commerce, worship, and agriculture.

When he was old enough, Gwion squired for his cousin Cedwyn, a Bachelor Knight who served his father as vassal. His term began with the siege of London, and during the ten years of his service, he fought, trained, and supported the Earl in all his endeavors. On one such adventure, while helping prepare Sir Cedwyn's horse for the Tournament, Gwion saw the boy Arthur pull a sword that had been long trapped in a large stone.

Injured at the battle of Carlion, it was two years before Gwion next saw action. He was beyond the age of knighting, but his training was put on hold while he recovered from his injuries. During that time, he fell in love with, and married a nobleman's daughter, Gwynfaer. In 514, Gwion was finally knighted, and his wife gave birth to their second daughter.

Sir Gwion was captured by Dorset forces in August of 514. During the attempt to rescue him, Gwion was slain.
