"Honor never grows old, and honor rejoices the heart of age. It does so because honor is, finally, about defending those noble and worthy things that deserve
defending, even if it comes at a high cost. In our time, that may mean social disapproval, public scorn, hardship, persecution, or as always, even death itself."

"The questions remain: What is worth defending? What is worth dying for? What is worth living for?"

Claire is the 3rd and final child of Barrett Stapleford. An Irish twin of her older sister Melusine, the two were raised very differently. Both were taught weapons like any normal child of the manor, but Claire's aptitude for the mannerisms of people and her enthusiasm for family lore lead her down a different path. From about age six she was given extra lessons from her grandmother, Dulcibella — the manor's formidable Keeper of the Bones and Matriarch. The woman was not quite ruthless but she demanded things from the young girl that few would expect a girl twice her age to handle well. Family lore, religious tenants, and how to behave as a lady who rules from the shadows. By the time she was eight it had been whispered around the family that she was to be the generational Keeper of the Bones and future matriarch. Her way of rebelling was to train constantly with a blade. Dulcibella pushed her harder. Claire pushed back by training harder. While Claire cursed her grandmother's name, Dulcibella smiled wickedly, knowing Claire was learning lessons she would need in the future. But nobody, not even Dulcibella, could foresee how badly they would be needed in the future.

It shocked nobody when Claire left at age ten in pursuit of becoming a Knight. Like most page and squire duties in the family, she was flung far and sent north with an old family friend, Sir Rafe de Steeton. She returned once at age 16 during the Winter for four weeks (which was spent in seclusion with Dulcibella) and was not seen again until she returned freshly Knighted in 515. The woman that returned was not to be trifled with. Her serious demeanor is befitting that of a Stapleford, and she conducts herself as a Lady, but has proven herself as a Knight in reconnaissance actions into enemy territory. They are the actions she is used to. Rumor is that she spent three of her six years as Squire up north, ambushing Pict raiding parties and learning how to survive with little support. It might have been hard to accept her back but she settled in quickly and with Dulcibella's health beginning a slow decline, Sir Claire knew what had to be done. It was time to start taking up the mantle for that which she had been raised. Holding her head high, she had embraced the slow transfer of position.

When Gideon disappeared four months later, though, she was thrust into a new role. A role for which women are never trained. A role she never wanted or wished for. Especially at her age.

Keeper of the Bones. Knight. Lady. Wife. Required Mother.

Head of House.

The first thing anyone likely notices about Claire are those very blue eyes, the color of the sky. She has thin features to her face, though, and full lips. Her skin is clear and very light, giving a stark contrast to her eyes and the full length of brown hair that tumbles down her shoulders in waves. The girl is pretty without being memorable but for the eyes.

Her body has an athletic quality at 5'3" that reveals some of the core strength, her body having the soft qualities of a youthful young lady to match the vigor of her life. A studied eye will catch that her arms show that there's been manual effort in the prior years. Her bliant is full length, a dark green color that closely matches a dark forest. There are are squared black bars that run nearly the length in front of each leg, a thin gold outline to each bar. It provides freedom of movement to the ground fitting snugly across her waist. The deep neckline to the front exposes a light grey undertunic. The sleeves of the bliant hang to mid-thigh, matching the length of the black cloak worn with a gold clasp along the neck. A loose leather belt is worn around her waist with a few small sheathes and pouches. The overall impression at a glance is a woman that seems sure of herself but lacks imposition.

Known Associates

Gideon de Stapleford
gideon Claire loves her brother and idolizes him. She'd do anything, including holding vigil for him. He went missing in Spring 515 during a hunting trip to the North and has not been seen since. Like any good Stapleford, she doesn't let her emotions cloud her face and the carefully schooled expressions note only her voiced concern for his well-being. Taking over his role isn't how she saw her life panning out.
