Description

Remarkably large and solidly built, it would be easy enough to mistake this young knight for a stablehand were he not dressed to station. His frame is powerful and rugged, the form of one who spends his days in physical pursuits instead of the kinder graces. His features are equally uncivil with tanned skin, a wide jaw perpetually etched with stubble, and a thick brow crowned with a mane of inconsistently tamed sandy-brown hair. And yet, there is a certain gentleness revealed in the care with which he carries himself and the quickness to which a smile finds his lips, making his hazel eyes flash with mirth.

Background

Aedan de Laverstock is the youngest surviving son of Lord Sir Galalloc de Laverstock, steward of House Laverstock and a battlefield knight. Tragically, his mother died in childbirth, bringing Aedan and his twin brother Amlyn into the world, and leaving Galalloc a widower with five sons and one daughter. As a line with a long history of battle and little maternal influence, Aedan and his siblings trained intently in the ways of knighthood and warfare from a young age.

Always large for their age, Aedan and Amlyn were rough and tumble lads who were always getting into scrapes and heated rivalries. Although virtually inseparable and unyielding in their defense of one another against anyone else, the slightest provocation would send the boys into a scuffle — often regardless of the propriety of the situation. This competition drove them in almost every aspect of their training: swordplay, horsemanship, hunting…any physical activity that could be judged or measured became an epic battle between the twin terrors.

Despite the follies of his youth, Aedan has always been a gentle soul under his large frame. When choosing opponents for training or even youthful brawls, he was careful to choose the toughest and strongest match and, given the choice, he would prefer to avoid an altercation entirely. Around children and animals, he was remarkably gentle, almost timid in his caution to avoid doing any harm. In contrast, his brother was all fire and confidence. An instigator and daredevil, Amlyn lived for the clash of arms, the thrill of victory, and any chance to test his mettle.

Had he been born into another life, Aedan likely would have been content to raise horses or live deep in the woods, but such was not the path of a Laverstock and so when he came of age, Aedan was squired to an knight of many advanced years, Sir Llywel. A master horseman and forester, Llywel trained Aedan extensively in arms and the ways of the hunt, adventuring in remote woods and guarding all-but forgotten roadways. Sir Llywel had little patience for the intrigues of court and taught his young squire the serenity of the forests at the expense of his more political skills.

Once he was knighted, Aedan was reunited with Amlyn and the pair set out in defense of the Crown one summer season. The twin’s rivalry was instantly reignited and each set out to overshadow the other on the battlefield. Unfortunately, the gods were less kind in war than they had been in play. Spurred on by their competition, Aedan and Amlyn found themselves cut off from their ranks and surrounded by Saxons. While they fought courageously, by the time reinforcements arrived, Aedan had been gravely wounded and Amlyn lost. While few blame the inexperienced knights, Aedan has yet to forgive himself for his brother’s death and continues to seek glory in both of their names.
