<OOC> Erylys says, "Looks like a Fallow Deer. :)"

A gathering is called just outside the gates along the east side of Sarum for anyone who was interested in taking a break from the joust to hunt for the Earl's table. Eyrlys is there with a gathering of dogs and kennel boys waiting on those that might join her. First to do so, is one of the younger knights who suffered a loss on the joust in the first round, a Sir Harvy de Grennich. He's waiting for others to join while seated on his horse, still trying to wake up.

Erylys converses with the kennel boys who have the dogs on leashes for the moment, waiting for others to join before releasing the pack.

Among those joining in the hunt is a young knight from Cholderton - Yorrick has recently petitioned the Earl to join as a Huntsman and needs to prove his worth. Which is why he's showing up to the Huntswoman's assembly, dressed out of his armor for the more free tunic to hunt in. "Merry Met." the knight offers to Erylys as he has a second knight who was fell in the first round, Sir Aedan de Calubriga. "May Gaia provide us with a fruitful hunt today."

Eyrlys smiles at the others who join her and the first knight who seems to take notice of Sir Aedan with a nod of his head. She seems more interested in Yorrick, the smile warmer as she greets him, "Merry met to you… are you Sir Cholderton? The Earl told me there might be another joining this morning?" Curious is she about the other hunter, but with four now in the group, she steps forwards.

"I'm Lady Erylys de Berwik St. James. Please, call me Eyrlys or Ery if you'd like. I'll be leading the hunt with the dogs. We'll see what they are lucky enough to pick up and run with, though I've seen tracks for boar and deer that are fresh in the area, so be prepared for both? " A look about the group, "Any questions?" If there aren't any, she turns to the kennel boys, "Release the dogs, please?" The dogs are eager to go, and run off from the group, noses to ground.

"I am, Lady Erylys. A pleasure to meet someone else that enjoys the hunt and outdoors as much as I." Yorrick offers to Erylys as he gives a nod. "When I was up at the camp this morning, I saw a small herd of fallow deer pass through on the edge." he admits as the knight watches the dogs are released, the knight falling in step with their two charges.

It doesn't take long, before Yorrick holds up his hand and waves Erylys over. "Look." he says, excitement in his eyes. "Droppings and tracks." he comments, gesturing to the small pile and the tracks along the ground. He lowers down, hovering his hand over the pile. "Still warm." he says, looking up to the lady. "We're on the right track."

Erylys nods to Yorrick, starting to head off in the opposite direction until he calls her name. Walking over, she crouches to take in the scat and tracks, also holding her hand out, "You're right. Good find." Not one to get upset over someone doing her 'job' better, she offers a smile before setting the dogs on the track.

The dogs take off, the bloodhounds snuffling along the grass down the way, the other dogs following, already baying their happiness at following the trail. "Let us follow!" With spear and bow, she takes off jogging after the dogs, leaving the knights on their horses to keep up easily with she and the dogs.

Mounting back up on his charger, the knight gives the Huntress a smile. It's good to get back in the field, and there's no superiority to it. They're both working on a mutual goal as Yorrick waves to his companions. "Come on boys, we have the Lady and dogs on the right track now. We'll find them." he offers enthusiastically as he falls into the front rank, moving to keep up with the party, watching Erylys at work as he does so. "I wanted to raise dogs when I was young." he admits off-hand. "But my father wanted me to be a knight instead."

Laughing lightly at his words, Erylys continues on in a slow jog, though at his words, she glances up at him on his charger, "My father is Master huntsman at Berwick St. James. My brothers are both knights, so it was me that father taught what he knew of hunting." A family business, if you will. "Came here to see if I could work for the Earl, and got a lucky break." So far, so good.

The dogs get closer to the deer, their baying more and more excited as the track gets fresher. Still the deer manages to keep away from them, leaping over fallen logs, and deeper into brush to try and shake them.

It's Erylys' guidance that Yorrick follows - while they may be near the same age, the knight had other duties outside the hunt. "I grew up wanting to get away from the Manor House and play in the fields.. I didn't get a chance to be raised from brith - I just happened to squire with a knight that also was a Huntsman, and he passed the itch on to me." he says as he realizes there are much worse pursuits than following an attractive young woman on a hunt, and he shakes his head, his hand reaching to touch a note under his tunic. "From what I've seen, ain't been much luck but your own skills that proved their worth to the Earl." he admits. "I hope to do half as well as you seem to be at this, to be considered a success."

The day stretches long, and the deer continues to avoid the dogs and hunters. As the hours turn towards midday, Eyrlys calls a brief break to grab some water and bits to eat, passing out some dried meat and fruit to those with her from a pack one of the kennel boys carried.

"We won't stop long, so be quick. We don't want the deer to get too far ahead of us." Taking her own water skin and jerky to chew on, she listens to the dogs, though turns back to conversation with Yorrick, "You found the deer straight off, which was good. From there, it's just doing your dogs and the area around us.." As she finishes up her jerky, she calls for all to mount up again, and they hit the trail once more.

The grouping of them take a little break, and as the other two younger knights are complaining about the fact that they're tracking a deer and not something more exotic that the Earl would be impressed with, such as a unicorn, or a boar, or even a wyrm. Yorrick rolls his eyes at the two of them as he works on his own jerky and refilling the waterskin. "We keep running it, it'll tire and take a break soon, and we'll make good time on it. I'd offer to let you ride with me, if you think it'd give us some speed, Erylys." he offers.

The knight finishes his own waterskin, putting it aside, Yorrick listening in on the two knights and shakes his head with an amused smirk. "I think this is their first hunt." he says in a conspiratorial tone to Erylys as the two of them are prepared to move out again. "Stop whining about the saddle sores, Sirs. The day is fine, the air is good, and the company is great. We will find our quarry soon enough."

Listening to the knights, Erylys tries not to laugh at them, looking to Yorrick as he speaks, "If they only knew what sort of trouble we'd be into if it was anything more than a deer. I wouldn't go after a unicorn or wyrm without a company of knights at my back." Shaking her head as she dusts her rear off after sitting on the grass, she snorts, "I wouldn't even tackle a grizzled boar with them along." That could be dangerous! Considering for a moment, she finally nods, "Perhaps for a short time? I would not wish to tire out your horse?" The deer is proving to be one of those that will take a while to cornor.

With his help, she'll hop to the back of his horse, her seat light and relaxed. The kennel boys continue on foot, offering encouraging whistles to the dogs that can still be heard tracking the fleeing deer ahead of them. "Here's hoping we catch up to it. If it's the same stag we tried the other day, it got away with a little cunning.."

Assisting her up so that she may settle in front of him, Yorrick settles into place as he grins. "Maybe Gwynn ap Nudd will provide us with better fortune if we work together, m'lady." he points out as he gives a small chuckle, picking up the pace of their ride with the dogs and the two other knights. "Though I think we're equally encumbered with our two companions, Erylys." he says as he leads the charger along the path to keep pace with the deer.

As the two of them continue to chat, the companionship between Huntsman and Huntsman in application has caused Yorrick to lose his place of the track, the trail fading for a moment as the dogs are baying in a small echo, causing the knight to pull on his reins. "Huh." he says, confusion coloring his features.

"True, I don't think I weight as much as armor and shield that they carrying.." Eyrlys answers, chuckling a little. General conversation comes between but as he starts to veer off the track and then realizes he's lost it, she reaches around him to the reins, and guides the horse back around to pick it up again, "This way.. they're heading towards the stream again." A good ear on this girl, or maybe it's the months she's had to work with these dogs in particular that she's able to pick up on the little differences.

"Yes, who hunts in full armor.." Yorrick says with a small chuckle, allowing her to take the reins when it comes to it. The knight gets a slight brush that darkens the freckles on his face as he allows her the lead. "He doesn't seem to be tiring as fast as we like. Maybe we interrupted his rut and he's taking revenge on us with this merry chase." he says with a laugh. Glancing back to the two other knights, the man looks thoughtful.

"Of course as it gets darker, the more chance that it will no longer be a deer that we are on the hunt of." he says teasingly, just to rattle the two other men, hazing them gently.

The day continues to get later, midday passing to afternoon. The deer keeps it's distance from the dogs, and yet remains close enough to keep them excited. A few times, there might be some minor pause before they find it again, the deer circling about on it's tracks.

Looking to the sky, Erylys hmms, "We have a few more hours to try and corner this deer before we will have to pull off of it so we can return before nightfall." That is, unless they decide to push on and spend the night in the woods! To Yorrick's words said in jest to the knights, she nods sagely, "Very true… could end up being a wyrm. Who can see better at night than us."

The last few hours pass, the deer staying /just/ head of the dogs. As dusk approaches, Eyrlys calls a halt to the group, turning to the knights, "We need to head back now, if we're going to return to Sarum before dark truly falls." Of course, the dogs yip and howl, still on the trail having not been called off, yet.

"Or we can press on, try and see if we manage to catch up to the deer. But that means we camp in the woods and return in the morning." She'll leave it up to the others, though if it was she alone, she'd likely stay and try to bring down the deer while she could.

Yorrick isn't as used to hunting from horseback as she is on foot, so he loses his way a couple of times, but each time, Erylys has gotten them back on course. Worse, the two knights with them seem to be complaining even more now that it's getting dark and they're mentioning talking about making camp. He listens to Erylys, finding his agreement with the young woman. "We could trace after it further - but if you think you and I could handle this together?" he's willing to take a chance on the Huntswoman, if she's willing to take a chance on him.

"I'm all up for it, but I do not wish to keep all of you out beyond the city." Which makes some people al ittle wary especially right now with Dorset and Saxons out and about. "So, majority wins this decision - we press on and camp. Or we turn back and get to the city before it truly gets dark. " They have just enough time to do that if they leave for Sarum now.

Unfortunately, they find themselves in a tie. Yorrick sides with the lady in continuing the hunt, as the other two knights seem to be rather frightened at the idea of staying out this later - way to scare them, Erylys! The pagan knight draws in a breath and looks towards Erylys helplessly. "Well, do we cast stones to see who goes furthest to determine who we decide to follow now?" he asks as the knight looks betwen the Huntswoman and the two knights.

"We will turn back." Erylys won't side against the two knights, it would seem. "We'll let them explain to the Earl that we once more, came up empty handed." Ah, see, it'll be their fault they didn't catch the deer for the Earl's table! Hah!

"A fair and just decision, Lady Erylys." Yorrick offers his hand to the woman to help her up. "Perhaps we will then be allowed to try our hunt again, come morning, so that we may have better fortune?" he asks her as he gives a grin. "And this time, we will make sure not to chase after such an elusive quarry."

Before she might take the offer of riding, Erylys nods to Yorrick, then gives the signal to the kennel boys to start calling the dogs out of the woods off the chase. A sound of a horn is blown three times, a pause, then three times more. Off the chase is the signal. Return to handlers. Within minutes, the first dog comes panting out of the brush, tail wagging, to be leashed by one of the kennel boys. In groups of two or three, others arrive as well, though the huntswoman will not leave till all dogs are accounted for. "Water them, and then come back to the city." The kennel boys nod, and will make their own slow way back to town.

Only then does she turn back to accept the offer of a ride, to help lead the knights back to town again. "Thank you. And I'd like that, if you want to gather another party tomorrow?"

"I think with the grounds as fertile as they are for the hunt this time of year, Erylys.." he admits as he moves to lift the woman to the saddle as Yorrick allows her to settle, "…that we should take every opprotunity we may for the hunt, and if we are fotunate in the bounty, we will have plenty to preserve or salt for later use, and to get us through the winter. Would you not agree, m'lady?"

Settling in the seat behind him, Erylys nods unseen behind him. "Aye, that I believe as well. We'll manage a good hunt yet." The last was called off when a summer storm stole up on the group. "Tomorrow should prove a good a day, and I may stay out in the woods longer, if we don't corner something quickly." So those that are intent on coming, may well prepare to camp in the woods!
