It's early morning, and Ebble Keep has been on full alert ever since the first raids were reported. It is said that Alvediston was hit by a small group of Dorset knights that were easily repelled, thanks to the successful defense of Ebbesbourne Wake that saw the Dorset men's numbers halved before they could proceed with a raid.

Still, hunters and others warn Lord Oswallt of movement by lone Dorset riders in the fork of the River Avon with the River Ebble, and he has sent two of the knights present at the engagements to serve as lookouts and intercept these likely scouts from the enemy county.

Kamron would prefer to be riding with another Lady Knight, or family, or friends, but whatever you want to say about Sir Catryn de Burcombe, you're not likely to insult her martial ability, so there are upsides to being assigned a patrol with her. Still, Kamron has kept relatively quiet thus far, his shield strapped onto his left hand, but his spear in the hands of his squire and his helmet doffed and resting atop the front of his saddle to give him a good clear view of his surroundings. His brows are furrowed, and although his head turns this way and that as if to study the surrounding countryside, his attention is directed more inward than out into the trees, hills, and grasslands around them. The perils of a knight in love.

Catryn was riding beside Kamron, one of her staunchest rivals, if there were such a thing. Behind her is her squire, mostly silent for the ride while trying to ignore Catryn while she can. Catryn, for her part, tries to refrain from barbed taunts thrown out towards the man she rides with, of only to amuse herself and pass the time. "Your cousin fights all of your battles for you, Sir Kamron? At the wedding tournament, he took it upon himself to return the favor and avenge you to fight me while I was down even so much to cut me with his sword." Her own helmet rests in front of her and she looks alert but not so much tense.

Success
Catryn checked her awareness of 10, she rolled 4.
Failed.
Kamron checked his awareness at 9, he rolled 11.

Everything in the surroundings seems calm; the trees are still, for absence of the summer breeze. The river ebbs and flows as it should, and birds chirp in the distance, for one reason or another.

However, Catryn might hear the beating of hooves against the ground - the sound of an approaching steed, surely. Coming from the south.

Kamron blinks as Catryn speaks up, confusion flickering across his features as he tries to catch up to any one-sided discussion that may have been ongoing. "Hrm?" And then the words are processed, and his brows lower in a frown, "No, Sir Catryn. I did not ask any such thing of my cousin. After our own combat at Carlion, I considered the matter over, as you demonstrated both courtesy and honor. I'm sorry if my cousin acted in an untoward manner toward you."

Well that was enough to deflate the sails and Catryn has nothing further to argue about it. It's likely a good thing because she falls silent at that. When she hears something that doesn't fit in to the usual sounds they had been hearing on their patrol, she pulls gently in on the reins. "A horse approaching," swiveling around a little, she looks towards the south. "Lance," she says to her squire, just in case they aren't friendlies.

As the sound gets closer — and now Kamron can hear it — so do the approaching figures of two knights, both looking rather fresh of face, and bearing the same heraldry. The colors and the symbols don't seem to quite match with anything known in Salisbury, with the black cross set in a field of gold. One of them draws a sword, while the other wields a spear, both charging forward as though meaning to engage Catryn and Kamron.

Kamron blinks at the warning from Catryn, reaching down for his helmet first. He too hears the sound, arrowing in on it before he pulls the bucket helm over his head, "I see them, Sir Catryn." And then he too holds out a hand toward his squire, the haft being slapped into his palm and held before Newt releases it. "I don't believe they're friendly…" Considering that they're already spurring toward the Salisbury knights. Once he's armed, he spurs his horse, "Hah!"

"Not friendly." Catryn agrees immediately, and when her lance is handed over, she tucks it against her before spurring her horse on and riding hard to the enemy, for surely they are the enemy as they are charging the two!

Failed.
Kamron checked his lance at 10, he rolled 15. (+5 Lance=Critical Success)
Success
Galahad makes a check for Joffrey Spear at 14, it rolled 8.
Kamron rolls 12d6 and gets (6 2 1 6 1 6 2 5 2 4 6 1) for a total of: (42) (-12 Reinforced Chainmail -6 Armor=24 Damage. Mortal Wound)

Kamron lets the point of his lance fall as he and Catryn thunder into the teeth of their charge, the lance crossing over the neck of his graying charger and settling… just right. "Family and Faith!" The blow is a little better than Kamron had intended, actually. The point slips past the other knight's shield, certainly, but the sway of the point is not quite in time with the charger's stride, and it lifts at the last moment. Instead of punching into the well-armored chest and hopefully knocking the man off his steed to capture for ransom, it pierces his throat in a welter of blood. To add insult to mortal injury, the blow doesn't even break Kamron's lance, and he rocks back in his saddle with the impact, then gallops past and begins to turn for another pass. He is halted, however, when he sees the extent of the bloody impact and the body slumping out of its saddle.

Failed.
Catryn checked her lance of 10, she rolled 12. (+5 Lance=Success)

Galahad rolls 1d6 and gets (1) for a total of: (1) (Fall Damage)

Catryn does ride for the one on the right, the one Kamron isn't going towards, her lance is out and she barely makes enough contact to strike him. The lance is immediately dropped and she takes up her sword, hearing the thud from the man who Kamron faces, "Well done, Dinton." The words cast out without her even looking over at him as she prepares for more hand to hand with her own guy.

Tommen is alone in the fight and unhorsed. He grits his teeth, holding his sword and shield in a defensive stance as he prepares for Catryn's incoming onslaught. Of note is the bag that the knight has slung across his shoulder. It's a messenger's. Why, one should wonder, does he have such a bag?

Kamron wheels his horse around, driving the point of his lance into the ground as he watches Catryn's opponent fall to the ground as well, "Newt, catch the horse!" Because a charger is a valuable thing to let get away. Pulling his axe from the loop at his right hip, he hefts it, urging his horse closer to where Catryn has her foe at a disadvantage. "Thank you, Sir Catryn. It looks as if you have this well in hand as well. You may yield whenever you wish, Dorset."

Critical Fail!
Catryn checked her merciful of 4, she rolled 20.

When given the choice, Catryn is going to take the way out that leads to the death of anyone that attacks her. With the option of him surrendering or her cutting him down, there is no question, she swings her sword at the man who had already fallen off his horse, and she continues to fight him, at least giving an attempt on not harming the bag.

Tommen continues to fight on, trying to move away from Catryn as they exchange blows. He takes a hit to the side, which his chainmail protects him against. He continues to try and defend himself from the Burcombe's attack, though once again his skill proved lacking compared to hers, a touch too slow, too clumsy.

Catryn does engage into a battle with the man and she's got the upper hand for awhile. After a little while though, the tides turn and the man gets a hit against her and she takes a tumble, getting injured from the man and the fall. It takes some doing but she makes her way to her feet again, continuing to fight as she can, determination in the set of her jaw. She's damned well hurt now, "A little help here?" She finally calls to Kamron, "Resting on your laurels." The words are ground out and she had waited as long as possible before even asking.

Kamron turns his horse this way and that, remaining on the far side of the Dorsetshire man from Catryn as the two fight and struggle for advantage. He clatters his axe-head against his shield as she knocks him down, but as soon as she is overbalanced, he spurs his horse forward, so that even as she is requesting help, he calls out, "'Ware, sir!" And then he is alongside the other knight, hammering his axe down at him. But he delayed a bit too long after warning the other man, and instead he takes a sword-blow across his lowback, rocking him forward in the saddle. "I thought," he notes as he struggles back into the fight, laying into the man afoot more readily now, "That I would leave him to you. My apologies, Sir Catryn."

Tommen, poor Tommen, continues on a desperate fight for his freedom, or life, or both, considering how Catryn came at him. He's using shield and sword to the best of his advantage here, but now his attentions are split, and sure enough, it promises to be a tough fight.

It takes some doing but Catryn keeps on fighting, still as determined even if the swinging, clanging blades takes a lot of the energy from her especially after taking a wound. Albeit the wound wasn't all that terrible but it was a weakness she didn't like to even allow. She continues to fight, sharing and splitting the battle with Kamron yet she doesn't reply back to his response he gives her, but she does fight the man even when he is weakening.

Kamron continues to circle the Dorset knight, collecting sword-blows on his shield and returning them with axe-blows that raise bruises, and occasionally draw blood, "You may yield with honor, Sir! You have fought well," He is interrupted by the need to parry another blow, and once again his axe whips past the other man's shield and strikes home. But on the return this time, he hooks the head of his axe behind the other man's shield, pulling hard and trying to open him up for Catryn to strike home.

Catryn's attack hits Tommen on his skull, and he collapses to the floor, blood pooling beneath him. His eyes close after a moment of being open as though in shock. Whether he is killed or not is up to Kamron or Catryn, but the messenger's bag he carries with him is ripe for the picking.

Inside it, should anyone deem to inspect, is a folded missive, and a map of the border between Salisbury and Dorset, with several marks on them. Perhaps attack plans of some sort.

Success
Catryn checked her cruel of 16, she rolled 3.

Critical Fail!
Kamron checked his merciful at 10, he rolled 20.

He was a powerful enemy to come after someone, perhaps her family again, perhaps the Earl himself. The choice made, Catryn brings her blade down again, into his body, into his chest, twisting it, ensuring the man is dead. When finished, she plucks up the bag and peers inside. Parchment. Her brows furrow and she holds out the bag towards Kamron if he wants to check it out.

Kamron shrugs a little helplessly as the man falls to the ground bleeding rather than yielding. Slipping his axe back through the loop of leather at his belt, he lifts off his helmet to study the surrounding area, making sure that there are no more enemies nearby. When he looks down, Catryn is drawing her sword back again, and for a moment, he opens his mouth to protest, and then he closes it, noting to himself as much as to anyone else, "He could have yielded at any time if he wanted to live." He looks to the bag, shrugging and reaching down to take it and look inside. Noting that his squire has returned with the first knight's charger in tow, he adds, "Newt, check the other man for any bags as well." He looks inside and shrugs down to Catryn, "These could be important. He certainly fought hard to keep them from us. Are you well enough to ride hard back to Ebble, Sir Catryn?"

Well that was a challenge if she ever heard one! "I am well enough." Catryn offers, the pride apparent in her voice. She gets to her own horse and hoists herself up and on. She looks towards her squire, "Take his sword," she nods towards the dead man now, the one who had the bag earlier. May as well, it never hurt to have a spare. Taking up the reins, she looks to Kamron, "Ready when you are, Sir Kamron."

Nothing of worth on the other man; if he carried a bag, it was likely on the back of the horse, and contained the standard traveling supplies one might expect a knight would have. Anything else is bloodied, torn in several places or is the mostly-intact spear of the deceased.

Kamron nods at Catryn's response, looking about the area one more time, and then nodding to Newt as well, "Then we'd best get back to Ebble as quickly as we can, Sir Catryn. We'll send someone back out for the bodies, to see them honorably buried." And their armor honorably looted, because even as damaged as it is, it's worth rather a lot. "To horse, Newt." Kamron will, however, collect his bloodied lance from where it is impaled in the ground before he rides off.
